Turn Your Homestead into a Profitable Course Using the ASK Campaign

Is your homestead just an expensive hobby? It doesn’t have to be! Many homesteaders struggle to find ways to make their lifestyle profitable, but the key to financial sustainability may already be in your hands. By turning your homestead knowledge into an online course, you can generate income while helping others learn the skills you’ve mastered.

In Episode 91 of Everyday Stories On Our Homestead, I shared how something as simple as writing down the steps to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich helped me see the power of creating a framework. The same principle applies when designing a homestead course. But how do you know what people want to learn from you? That’s where the ASK Campaign from Day 4 of the OFA Challenge comes in.

The ASK Campaign: Finding Out What Your Audience Needs

The ASK Campaign is a simple yet powerful method for uncovering the exact content your audience wants. Instead of guessing, you ask! Here’s how it works:

Provide Value First – Join 3-5 groups where your ideal customers are. Answer their questions and establish credibility.

Ask Your Question – Use a simple, direct approach: “I’m creating a course on [your topic]. What’s your biggest question about it?”

Use Responses to Create a Framework – Their questions form the perfect outline for your course.

Package and Launch – Take your framework and build a structured, profitable course.

The 4-Tier Framework for Creating Your Homestead Course:

Once you have responses from your ASK campaign, it’s time to create your course using this structured framework:

1. Analyze Your Resources

What skills and knowledge do you have that others want to learn? You might take for granted your ability to:

Raise chickens for eggs and meat

Preserve food through canning and fermentation

Grow a productive garden year-round

Make homemade soaps, candles, or herbal remedies

There are people willing to pay for this knowledge to shortcut their learning curve.

2. Create a Step-by-Step Framework

Just like making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, break your skillset down into clear, actionable steps. For example, if you’re teaching gardening, your framework might include:

Step 1: Choosing the right soil and location

Step 2: Selecting the best seeds for your climate

Step 3: Watering and fertilizing schedules

Step 4: Pest and weed management

Remember all the details are in the answers to your ASK Campaign!

3. Package Your Knowledge Strategically

Instead of offering one-off tutorials, bundle your lessons into a structured package. This increases perceived value and makes it easier for students to learn. Some options include:

Beginner to Advanced: Start with basic concepts and build on them.

Themed Modules: Focus each section on a specific topic (e.g., “Winter Gardening Essentials” or “Raising Backyard Chickens”).

Membership Model: Offer continuous learning with regular updates and community access.

4. Launch and Market Your Course

Use the responses from your ASK campaign as marketing material. When people tell you their biggest struggles, those phrases become your sales copy. For example, if multiple people say, “I don’t know where to start with canning,” your course can be marketed as “The Beginner’s Guide to Canning: Everything You Need to Get Started.”
