The Power of Creating Opportunities

I came across an incredible story on the Homesteady podcast about a gentleman who had nothing—no money, no vehicle (or at least not one that could pull a trailer), no trailer—but he wanted to help people. He knew that local farmers needed better grass in their fields to make high-quality hay. So, he came up with a way to help them by using chicken tractors to regenerate their land.

He didn’t have a trailer, so he found a way to fit everything into a small U-Haul rental trailer. He put up flyers around the community, knocked on doors, and spoke to farmers. Before he knew it, he had a whole bunch of opportunities to put chicken tractors in people’s hayfields.

What did he do differently? He followed three key principles:

1. Identify the Win-Win

The key to getting others involved in your homestead is to find out what they need and figure out how you can help. The gentleman in the story realized that farmers needed better soil and he needed land to raise chickens. By solving their problem, he solved his own problem at the same time.

Ask yourself: What does my community need? How can my homestead solve that problem while also benefiting my own operation?

2. Present with a Hook and Value

Once you identify the win-win, you need to capture people’s attention and show them why it’s worth getting involved. The best way to do this is to craft a compelling hook and deliver undeniable value.

The farmer in the story didn’t just say, “Hey, can I use your land for my chickens?” Instead, he framed it in a way that made it valuable to the landowners: “I can improve your soil, increase your hay yield, and take care of everything for free.” That’s an offer that’s hard to resist!

When you present your ideas, always focus on how you can help the other person first. The more valuable your offer is, the easier it will be to get people to say yes.

3. Make Involvement Easy

People are busy. If you want them to say yes, you need to remove as many barriers as possible.

In the story, all the farmers had to do was provide the land—that’s it. The gentleman took care of everything else. He made it so easy that it was a no-brainer to say yes.

When inviting your neighbors or community members to collaborate, ask yourself: How can I make this so simple that they can’t refuse? If they don’t have to put in extra work, they’ll be far more likely to get involved.
