Keeping It Simple on the Homestead

Many homesteaders (myself included) tend to overcomplicate things, both in daily chores and in business endeavors. In this latest episode of Everyday Stories on Our Homestead, I dig into the powerful concept of KISS—“Keep It Simple, Stupid”—and show how it applies to marketing a homestead-based venture. Even better, these same principles connect directly to multi-million-dollar business strategies: the concept of focusing on one funnel, one presentation, one offer, and one traffic source. Below, I’ll break down these ideas and invite you to learn more through the OFA Challenge, which dives deeper into finding your “one things.”

1. Overcomplicating Is the Enemy
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably started projects that ballooned into bigger-than-necessary undertakings—like turning a simple garden plot into a maze of raised beds, irrigation systems, and too many seed varieties. The same goes for marketing. We might feel pressure to be on every social media platform, run multiple ads, and build multiple funnels at once. But guess what? More isn’t always better. In fact, it often leaves us drained and scattered, making it nearly impossible to see real progress.

2. Why “KISS” Matters
The phrase “Keep It Simple, Stupid” can sound a bit harsh, but it’s a classic reminder from grade school for good reason. The simpler your approach, the easier it is to follow through consistently. Whether that’s focusing on a single method to grow crops or a single funnel to drive your homestead’s online sales, the end result is less confusion and more clarity. If you want to see how multi-million-dollar businesses stay streamlined, look at their unwavering commitment to keeping processes direct and uncomplicated.

3. One Funnel
At the heart of the KISS approach is the idea that you don’t need multiple complicated sales funnels to reach your audience. One funnel—a simple series of web pages or emails guiding people from interest to purchase—can do the job effectively if it’s well-structured. Imagine you’re selling goat milk soap or a mini-course on orchard maintenance. Rather than building half a dozen funnel variations, concentrate on making one funnel that’s truly user-friendly and optimized to convert visitors into loyal customers.

4. One Presentation
Next up is having one presentation. This could be a short video pitch, a webinar, or an in-person talk at a local farm market. By crafting a single, polished presentation, you perfect your messaging and avoid the pitfalls of trying to deliver multiple styles or versions all at once. You’ll gather feedback, fine-tune your talk, and consistently improve it until it becomes a reliable tool that sells for you. Multi-million-dollar businesses do this by testing one strong core pitch, then refining it based on real audience responses.

5. One Offer
An offer is more than just a product or service. It’s the total package of goodies, bonuses, and support that makes your product stand out. Instead of juggling multiple offers—like separate eBooks, mini-courses, and consultations—pick one robust package that solves a big problem for your buyers. Maybe it’s a “Homestead Mastery Pack” including short lessons, cheat sheets, and live Q&A sessions. By focusing on a single compelling offer, you eliminate confusion for potential customers and convey the value more clearly, which can significantly boost sales.

6. One Traffic Source
Many homesteaders chase every possible traffic source—Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, email lists, even TikTok—hoping to hit the jackpot. However, focusing on one main source of traffic allows you to master that channel’s nuances. If you find success through simple Facebook ads or by building a dedicated email list, you can truly optimize that channel for growth. Later, once your funnel is thriving, you can branch out. But to start, KISS: stick to one traffic stream you feel comfortable experimenting with.

7. The Power of “One”: Avoid Burnout & See Results
When all these elements—funnel, presentation, offer, and traffic—are each kept to just one version, you can pour your energy into making them truly outstanding. This not only saves time and mental bandwidth, but it also minimizes overwhelm. For homesteaders juggling daily chores and caring for animals, a simpler approach means you’ll actually follow through and see consistent results—mirroring what big businesses do to scale their operations efficiently.

Conclusion: Jump Into the OFA Challenge to Fine-Tune Your “One Things”
If the idea of going “all-in” on a single funnel, presentation, offer, and traffic source sounds liberating, you’re in luck. The One Funnel Away Challenge (OFA) offers in-depth training on how to laser-focus these elements into a powerful engine for your homestead business. Sign up begins today! Embracing the KISS principle is easier when you have a clear roadmap and a supportive community cheering you on.
