Hey everyone! Welcome to Everyday Stories on Our Homestead. I’m Scott, here in Hartford, Kansas, with my amazing wife, Tamera, and our eight wonderful kids.
Today, I want to dive into a topic that I think about often: the benefits and challenges of capitalism, especially as it relates to time management and building a profitable homestead.

The Spark: My Daughter’s Video:

Recently, my daughter sent me a video titled "Time Management is Capitalist Propaganda" by Elliot Singh.
I watched it because I wanted to understand her perspective and have a good discussion about the ideas he raised.
The video critiques the concept of time management as being rooted in capitalist ideals. While I see some truth in that, I also have a different perspective.
What Capitalism Means to Me

To some, capitalism means greed, but to me, it’s about creating value and helping others—like Zig Ziglar says, “Help enough people get what they want, and you’ll get what you want.”
Capitalism gives us choices—where we work, what we buy, and how we use our freedom of speech. It’s not perfect, but it provides opportunities that don’t exist in other systems.
We live in a society where freedom and options come with responsibility. If we approach it with generosity rather than greed, capitalism becomes a force for good.

Our Mindset Shapes Our Experience:

What we focus on is what we see. For example, when I bought my first car, a Chevy Celebrity, I suddenly started noticing them everywhere!
If we focus on what’s wrong with a system, we’ll see the flaws. But if we look for the positives, we’ll find opportunities to create value and help others.

Time Freedom and Value Creation:

I don’t believe in trading time strictly for dollars. Time is precious, and we don’t get it back.
Instead, we can create value for others that generates income without tying it directly to our time. This concept is core to how I approach building a profitable homestead.
When we create a business that runs beyond our time investment, we’re no longer tied to an hourly wage—we’re creating time freedom and financial stability.
Applying These Ideas to the Homestead

By using capitalism as a tool for good, we can offer quality products, help our community, and still achieve the financial freedom we need to support our family and grow our homestead.
I’m working on this journey myself, building from less than an acre to a dream of 50 acres and beyond. My goal is to create value and, in turn, receive value back to grow and thrive.
