Hey, welcome to Everyday Stories on Our Homestead! It’s great to have you here.
Today, I’m sharing my thoughts on different kinds of education—college versus learning from life itself—especially when it comes to homesteading and making a living.

My Personal Story: College vs. Life Experience:

Like a lot of folks, I went to college with the idea that a degree would open doors and lead to financial security. I got my degree in Spanish, and while it’s been useful, the entrepreneurial side of me always wanted something different.
I’ve realized I’ve always had a calling for building my own business, creating a homestead, and finding ways to support my family and community without just following the standard path.
The world often teaches us that a college degree equals success, but I've learned that’s not necessarily true, especially in farming and homesteading.

Lessons from Family: Practical Knowledge Goes a Long Way:

Take my uncle as an example—he’s a sod farmer who has done really well without a college education. He’s built a successful business from the ground up by growing grass and supplying new properties with fresh sod.
My other uncle in St. Louis is in the same line of work and has also found a way to make a great living. Seeing their success showed me the power of hands-on knowledge and real-world experience.
When I think about it, every millionaire I personally know skipped college. They found their success through hard work and learning from life, which got me thinking a lot about the value of practical skills.

Building My Own Persistence and Focus:

I’ve been reflecting on the idea of “finding someone who has what you want and doing what they did” to achieve the same results. Tony Robbins says it, but it goes way back to Jim Rohn’s wisdom too.
We often look at someone’s success and want to jump to where they are without realizing it’s all about starting where they did and following the same steps.
For me, getting from less than an acre to a full homestead requires a focus on income and strategy, and a good dose of persistence.


Our Homestead: Where We Are and Where We’re Going:

Right now, our small plot is packed with all kinds of goodness—grapes, raspberries, blackberries, elderberries, apple trees, and even a “fruit cocktail” tree with peaches and plums.
It’s not quite the full homestead I dream of yet, but it’s a step on our journey to building something bigger.
I’ve found that learning by doing, plus a bit of hard-knocks education, is making a huge difference as we work toward that larger vision.
