Over the course of a week, I traded a simple paperclip for increasingly valuable items, from fool's gold to sweet tarts, cream soda, a necklace, and more, showing how commerce, creativity, and finding the right target market can produce abundance. This experience opened my eyes to the beauty of trading value and the importance of providing solutions people need. It’s a great reminder that even starting small can lead to great things if you find the right people and keep going.

Welcome to "Everyday Stories on Our Homestead" – I’m Scott Westhoff.
Today’s episode is about "The Power of a Paperclip" and a valuable lesson I learned from a church business class.

The Business Class and Activity:

I took an Self-Reliance class at church focused on building a business.
The class is part of the self-reliance initiative, which I found to be really insightful.
The activity involved trading a paperclip for a week to see how much value I could create.

The Paperclip Trading Journey:

First, I tried to trade the paperclip with my wife, but she said she wasn’t part of the target market. 
Then I traded with my daughter for fool's gold.
Next I traded the fool's gold with Samuel for sweet tarts.
I continued trading: orange mints → Kool-Aid on-the-go packets → cream soda.
My son Ben was excited, thinking I’d get a great trade for the cream soda.
Then, traded for a necklace, followed by heart mambas and raisins.
Ate the raisins and traded the heart mambas for advanced healing ointments.
Final trades: sparkling water → hand sanitizer and candle → foam creature and beautiful rock.

Lessons Learned:

The power of commerce and trading, starting from something small like a paperclip.
How bartering can lead to bigger and better things.
Key takeaway: Finding your target market is crucial – like how my wife wasn’t interested in the paperclip but others were.
The beauty of abundance and providing value to others.
